AliExpress has a reputation problem — and some of it is deserved. But plenty of people shop there regularly and get excellent pieces at prices that make other budget platforms look expensive. The difference is knowing how to shop it properly. Blind clicking is how you end up with paper-thin fabric and sizing 3 sizes off. This process is how you end up with a $12 dress that looks like $60.
1. Read Reviews the Right Way
Don’t read AliExpress reviews for praise — read them for red flags. Sort by “Most Recent” and look specifically for comments about fabric quality, sizing accuracy, and shipping time. If three recent reviews mention “thinner than expected” or “runs very small,” trust that over a thousand old positive reviews. The most valuable reviews include photos taken by the buyer — these show what the item actually looks like, not the seller’s photo-edited listing image.
2. Check Seller Ratings Carefully
AliExpress sellers are rated by Feedback Score (total positive reviews) and Positive Feedback Rate (%). Only buy from sellers with 95%+ positive feedback and at least 500 completed orders on the specific item you’re buying. New sellers with few sales are high risk, even if the product looks great. The store’s overall rating matters less than the specific item’s review count.
3. Always Look at Buyer Photos
This is the single most important filter. If a listing has buyer photos — real people wearing the actual product — that’s a major positive signal. If the only photos are professional model shots, you’re working blind. Search for “buyer reviews with photos” in the review filter. What you see in those photos is what you’re actually going to receive.
4. Use AliExpress Coupon Codes
AliExpress runs constant promotions — their “Choose Day” sales, new user coupons, and seasonal events. Before any purchase, check the AliExpress coupon section and your account’s “Coupons” tab. Stack a seller coupon with a platform coupon where possible. It’s common to get an additional 15–20% off an already cheap price.
5. Understand the Sizing Charts
AliExpress sizing uses Asian measurements which run smaller than US/EU sizes. Always use the seller’s measurement chart — not their listed size equivalents. Measure yourself (bust, waist, hips) and compare to the chart dimensions. Size up one to two sizes as a general baseline, but actual measurements are the only reliable guide.
6. What’s Safe to Buy
- Safe: Accessories, jewelry, scarves, bags, phone cases, novelty items
- Risky but worth it: Simple basics (t-shirts, joggers), swimwear, shoes with careful size research
- High risk: Structured clothing (blazers, tailored pieces), anything with complex sizing
