Getting paid to shop isn’t a scam — it’s just understanding that brands pay referral and loyalty platforms to drive purchases, and some of that money gets passed back to you. Stack the right programs and you’re realistically looking at $50–100 a month back on shopping you were already doing.
Rakuten: The Cashback Foundation
Rakuten is the first program everyone should set up. Install the browser extension and activate cashback every time you shop at a major retailer. Rates range from 1% at some stores to 15–40% during bonus periods at stores like Macy’s, Nike, or Sephora. Rakuten pays out every quarter — many people forget about it and get a pleasant surprise check or PayPal deposit.
Stack Rakuten With Credit Card Rewards
This is where the real money is. Use a cashback credit card — like the Chase Freedom Unlimited (1.5% back on everything) or a rotating category card — while shopping through Rakuten. You get the Rakuten portal cashback AND the card’s rewards simultaneously. On a $200 Sephora order during a Rakuten bonus event, that can mean $30+ back between the two.
Swagbucks for Online Shopping
Swagbucks gives you SB points when you shop through their portal, complete searches, watch videos, and answer surveys. The shopping portal is the most efficient use of the platform — it pays out in gift cards for Amazon, PayPal, Target, and more. Not as clean as Rakuten, but works at stores Rakuten doesn’t cover.
MyPoints
MyPoints works similarly to Swagbucks with a shopping portal plus bonus activities. Good for layering on top of Rakuten for stores where both pay out simultaneously.
Fetch Rewards for Grocery Receipts
Every grocery receipt goes into Fetch Rewards. It doesn’t matter which store — Walmart, Kroger, Whole Foods, Target, even gas stations. Scan receipts within 14 days and earn points. Those points convert to gift cards. Scanning one receipt per week for a year adds up to roughly $30–50 in gift cards for zero behavior change.
Optimizing Credit Card Rewards
The right credit card multiplies all of the above. A few solid options:
- Chase Freedom Unlimited: 1.5% back on everything, 3% on dining and drugstores
- Citi Double Cash: 2% back on everything — simple and consistent
- Blue Cash Preferred (Amex): 6% at grocery stores, 3% on gas
Pay the balance in full every month and the rewards are pure profit. Carrying a balance wipes out any gains immediately.
